The entry-level Ford Focus has an underpowered 1.4-litre engine for use out of town, so we recommend that the best choice for economy and performance is the 1.6-litre. A 1.8-litre unit is also available.
 
The early TDi models are unrefined and noisy but the later TDCi engines are excellent with good performance and a much smoother nature.

 

If it's performance you're after then the ST170 with a 2.0-litre engine is the best bet although with a 0-60mph time of 7.9 seconds it's not quite a true hot hatch.
